Description

This Russian Orthodox Church, situated in Midrand, South Africa, is a somewhat alien, if beautiful, anomaly in an African setting.

The church's web site states that, "The Russian Orthodox Church of Saint Sergius of Radonezh was designed in Russia according to centuries-old tradition, but it is the only one to be built south of the equator." The only attempt at assimilation, perhaps 'reference' is a better term, is the inclusion of little Cape Dutch gables that appear on each side. The architect is Kirs George Victorovich.

I was unaware we had a significant Russian expat community here in Johannesburg. Attracted by the golden domes I was made most welcome during my visit and invited to attend a service the next day, with my wife in tow, but was warned that orthodoxy dictates that it was standing room only... and that services can be up to 3 hours long...

There will always be another Sunday.
