Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt. Paul's Memorial Church South Bend 1910.jpg |
English: St. Paul's Memorial Church on West Colfax Avenue in South Bend, Indiana, pictured in a c. 1910 postcard. The church was formed in 1872 as a Methodist congregation, and its current Gothic Revival building at 1001 West Colfax Avenue was built between 1901 and 1903 with $150,000 donated by Clement "Clem" Studebaker as a memorial to his father-in-law George Milburn. From 1882 to 1903, the congregation met in a building donated by Clem's wife Ann Studebaker known as the Milburn Memorial Chapel. The present-day edifice has been known during its history as the Milburn Memorial Church and as St. Paul's Methodist Episcopal Memorial Church. The name St. Paul came from the church's large stained-glass depiction of the Apostle Paul preaching in the Areopagus. The pipe organ, one of the largest in South Bend, features 2,400 pipes ranging from 16 feet to less than half an inch. |
