And so it behooves us to be ever onthe alert, ready to take in the lesson that chancemay teach us. It was chance that led to the dis-covery of the Pelton wheel. Prior to its invention,there were three general types of water-wheelsthat had been handed down to us from the daysof the ancient Egyptians: the overshot wheel, inwhich the water flows over the top of the wheeland turns it partly by its weight and partly by itsvelocity; the undershot wheel, in which the waterstrikes against the buckets at the bottom of thewheel and turns the wheel by its velocity alone;and the breast-wheel, in which the water entersthe
