ol is to-day a highly de-veloped organization engaged in protecting fromfire the forests of the Pacific coast all the way fromCanada to Mexico. Twenty-one million acres ofnational forests, containing one hundred and tenbillion feet of standing timber, worth two hundredand twenty million dollars, are patrolled daily byairplanes during the summer season, when firesare prevalent. In addition, almost an equalamount of private timber is patrolled at the sametime. The Airplane Patrol is designed to supplementthe work of the men in the forest lookout-stations.The observers in the lookouts are on duty all thetime, while the aviators are in the air only a fewhours daily. But the field of vision from thelookout-station is limited by ranges of hills andmountains, while the aviators can observe theentire country. In California, where the AirplanePatrol originated, there are now six stations fromwhich aviators make daily round-trips over desig-nated routes. The stations are at aviation fields, 771
