Servants may be present also, if stageis large enough, and may seem to light the sceneby torches (see page 940) which they hold aloft. Reader. Still at the table sat the queen, surrounded by hertrain; She would not eat, she would not drink, persua-sion was in vain. Sudden a stir was heard without, and then, withvesture torn. Appeared the knave, a sorry sight, all tattered andforlorn. He bore the tarts, all red and white; he sank uponhis knee And vowed repentance long and late, if he mightpardoned be. Queen Sweetheart faltered; Greatheart cried, with proud and lofty mien,Serve up the tarts, forgive the knave; be every inch a queen!The lady smiled; she took the tarts; she raised the weeping knave;She ordered music; to her lord her lily hand she gave. The courtiers followed in her train, exultant, oneand all That dance of tarts was neer forgot in cottage orin hall 1 938

940 WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TARTS TABLEAU V THE KNAVE BEFORE THE QUEEN.Scene same as before. Curtain rises on knaveof hearts kneeling at feet of queen, holding upthe dish of tarts. His face is pale and his clothingtorn. The king stands behind him, with frowningface, leaning on his sword. Courtiers, maids, andmen look on in interested attitudes. Swords aresheathed, and servants have laid aside torches. After a few moments have been given to lookat the tableau, it becomes a moving picture. Thequeen rises, motions the knave to rise also, takesthe platter with a gracious smile and hands it to aservant, who sets it on the table and waves hishand as if to invisible orchestra. Music begins.Sweetheart gives her hand to the king, and theservants lift the table to back of the stage. Eachcourtier and senont finds a partner and a statelydance is begun, if the performers can manage theminuet. Knave stands with hanging head, at left,until one of the maids draws near, pats him onshoulder coqucttishly,
