The Bolsheviks,after driving in upon Warsaw, had been repulsedwith great losses, and were in disorder. The Russian is a good soldier, but he has aqueer streak in him. He is temperamental,fatalistic. He fights hard while he does fight,but when it looks as if the fight were hopeless, heis inclined to believe that it is not meant that he shall gain the victory—and he calmly stopsfighting. The Russian way of life is quite differ-ent from our Anglo-Saxon belief that a manmakes his own fate; and the difference is boundto show, in war as in other things. So it seemedas if such a reverse as the Reds suffered beforeWarsaw might be decisive against them.
