Not too plastic, asin the previous years, they are still shapable, andoften at this time is settled their future physicalefficiency, and probably that of mind and soul. If fortunate, at that period our future man orwoman reaches the domain of the athletic di-rector, who has at his command to-day only twosystems: systematic mechanical exercises, and thecompetitive method, with its dangers. Every oneknows how tedious and ineffective mechanicalexercises, calisthenics, drill, and all the rest be-come ; and many teachers understand the dangersof competitive athletics before sixteen. Can we not, then, find a system superior toeither in the development of muscle and nerve-control, and in the promotion of proper circula-tion and digestion, and still fascinating for theboy and girl?
