Some kind shopkeepers haddonated fishing-rods and reels,trout flies, game-bags, bowsand arrows, and many suchwares. Betty was happy andgay, and her dark curls clus-tered round her merry, rosyface as she wheedled her pa-trons into making further pur-chases of all sorts of wares. October was Lena Careys choice. She used allthe traditional features of Halloween, and in asemi-darkened tent she told fortunes to gulliblevictims. Dressed as a witch in a red robe, ablack cape, and a red peaked hat, she fondled herown pet black cat, though old Tabby would riotlook weird and mysterious. The interior of Lenas tent was scarefully deco-rated with bats and strange devices, and wasadorned with lighted Jack-o-lanterns. Lena was clever at fortune-telling, and, as herclients were not exacting as to methods, she man-aged to satisfy them all with most pleasant, evenif most improbable, promises for the future,
