hose gray-haired)can write D.C.L. Oxon. after their namesnowadays. He must also have been popular, for he was a lieutenant-colonel and the com-mandant of the militia of Sevenoaks (the near-est town to Knole) at the same age. There has been very little recorded of hisshort early life, and there was, alas ! no later lifeto chronicle. At the age of twenty-one he waskilled by a fall from his horse in the hunting-field, when on a visit to his mother in Ireland. The title went to his cousin, who was the fifthand last Duke of Dorset. Thus George John Frederick never lived togain the fame of his great ancestor, the poet andstatesman, the first Earl of Dorset. As far as we are concerned, all knowledge ofhim might have lain buried in the old leather-bound books of the peerage in an alcove ofsome remote library, had it not been for JohnHoppner, formerly a German chorister boy at theChapel Royal, whom George III encouragedto learn to paint, and who became, through the THE LITTLE DUKE OF DORSET. 725

Hoppner painted the portrait which isreproduced in the above picture. It found itsway from Knole into the galleries of Buckhurst,in Sussex, the seat of the Earl of Delawarr and formerly the home of Elizabeth, BaronessBuckhurst, the younger sister of the little duke.Mr. Andrew Carnegie spent some time atBuckhurst recently, saw the picture, and pur-chased it.
