Now, when a giant runs you may be surethat it does not take long for him to get any-where; and although his stone house wouldhave been a long way off for you or for me,the Giant was there and back again in a fewseconds. What do you suppose he brought back withhim from his stone house ? The Giant now took his pine-tree staff andbegan to go up the ladder. He was so heavythat he had to go very slowly, for fear he wouldfall. When he reached the top round of theladder he stood still. Then, taking hold of thepine-tree by the butt-end, he pushed up the topwith its branches to where Johnny was, andat last everybody on the ground saw what theGiant was going to do. What s the matter? roared the Giant;and everybody kept quiet. tight, said the Giant, in a firm but pleasantvoice. Little Johnny obeyed. Although he wasvery much scared, he wanted to get back tohis father and mother so much that he lost notime in climbing into the very top of the pine-tree, where he hung on for dear life. JOHNNY AND THE GIANT. 251 Then the Giant slowly, slowly went downthe ladder again. When he reached the groundhe bowed to Mrs. Nagg, and said: Madam, I have the honor of returning toyou a very nice little boy. So speaking, he pointed the pine-tree straight roared out:at her.
