Text Appearing Before Image:
and affordsthe foreign visitor sights of peculiar interest. As soon as the fishing-boats are seen returning, crowds begin to gather on the quay; and thefactories blow whistles or ring bells to summontheir women and girls, who are seen hurryingthrough the streets in their odd, picturesquecostume — short dark skirts, glistening whitelinen caps and collars, . and clumsy woodenshoes. As the boats arrive and begin to dischargetheir catch, the crowd on the quay is in- creased by thousands of fishermen in coarseblouses and flat cloth caps, with trousers rolledup and feet bare or in huge wooden shoes.Above the commingled noise of waves andtongues is heard the incessant characteristicrattle of wooden shoes on the stony pavements. As the boats are unloaded, the nets are hauledto the tops of the tall masts to dry; the dockgradually becomes deserted ; and the final sceneis an intricate mass of boats and masts, with amaze of blue netting and strung corks wavinghigh in the air in graceful festoons.
Text Appearing After Image:
BACK IN PORT AND DUYING THE NETS. PETER PUFF-AND-BLOW. Up rose old Peter Puff-and-Blow, And puffed and blew the whole night long,Determined to let people know How fresh he was, how stout and strong. But though he was so strong and stout, He could not puff the night-light outThat swayed and flickered in my room. The goblin shadows leaped and fell; The night-light, flickering to and fro,Burned on till dawn and served me well, And bawled and blustered through the gloom, In spite of Peter Puff-and-Blow.
