Later than all of thesecivil towers is the cu-rious Clock Tower inthe square of San Marcoin Venice, gorgeous withits dial in gold and blue.The twelve signs of thezodiac are there resplen-dent, and the suns on thehands of the clock traveltwice round the great facein the twenty-four hours.On the top of the towerstand two bronze figuresof men on either side ofa huge bell. They hold heavy hammers in their hands as if ready todeal a blow and as each hour arrives, thefigures in bronze, who have been called Moors, strike the hour upon the bell with dignified solem-nity. One of these bronze Moors is said by tra-dition to have been guilty of murder; for witha swing of its hammer it hurled a poor, innocentworkman over the edge of the parapet. As the

You haveheard about the great flocks of gentle pigeonswhich have lived since time immemorialamong the spires of San Marco, and whichcome daily to be fed and to patter in and outbetween our feet upon the pavement below,with the simple confidence of little children.The superstition of the Venetians has with jealous care kept them undisturbed throughthe years. It is impossible, within this short space, evento tell in the briefest way the stories of themost celebrated towers of Italy; and the tragiclegend of the Tower of Famine in Pisa, thegentler memories of Hildas Tower in Rome,with a host of others, must be left untold.
