sweet, and the Ohio or fetid buckeye, etc.Its wood is tough and strong and makes famousfarming implements. Hickory also has a compound leaf, beingrelated to the buckeye. There are five or sevenleaflets, but instead of radiating from a commoncenter, as in the buckeye, they are arrangedalong a stem in pairs, with the odd one aloneat the end. There are also several varieties ofhickory, some of which are well known to theboys who live near the woods, such as shag-bark, big shellbark, mockernut, pignut, bitter-nut or swamp-hickory, and the delicious pecan-nut of the South and Southwest. This latter variety is the largest tree in thehickory family, often reaching a height of onehundred and seventy feet. It is sometimesfound as far north as the Ohio River, but at-tains its best development in Texas, wheregreat supplies of the popular nuts are shippedto market.
