No, said the sergeant, as he cut at thetop of a sage-brush with the loose end of thelariat hangingat his saddle. I did nt hearit, but it yelled,I guess. BillyMurphy wason guard downat Post No. 2,and he did ntdare walk thelength of hisbeat. Let s gothere to-nightand fetch it in,said the boy. No—not! The soldierrarely spoke inso positive amanner to hisyounger com-panion. Theyhad grown tobe quite goodfriends. SoSergeant Gorelooked at thetrim figure byhis side, andadmired — asa cavalrymanwould—Tadsposture in thesaddle. Andthen he gazeddown the long road to the bluff on the shinglyledges of which the panther they had beenspeaking of was said to prowl at night and callto the echoes in that fearsome voice.
