lebetter than beasts of burden. The coolies ofthe far East are less expensive carriers thanhorses or even donkeys; and Mr. Stanley, inhis wonderful African journeys, was always fol-lowed by a host of Zanzibari porters. Youwill find such porters, too, in India, in SouthAmerica, in China, and in Egypt; and even inmore highly civilized countries these humancarriers are no infrequent sight. Not many years ago, on the highroadsabout Wittenberg, in Germany, travelers fre-quently met an old woman trudging slowlyalong, pushing before her a light wheelbarrowloaded with bundles and parcels. The old woman was at least sixty, but shewas so cheerful and uncomplaining that thepeople had no hesitation in employing her.She had many knickknacks and parcels tocarry to and from the city, into which, three orfour times a week, she pushed her barrow, which folks called the Wittenberg Express. This plucky old woman walked with her ex-press wheelbarrow at least ten miles each trip, I9°5) QUEER CARRIERS. 631
Text Appearing After Image:
AFRICAN CARRIERS OF IVORY. and her earnings, a small fee for each parcel, served to support herself and her two invaliddaughters, who could do only a little sewing. The old woman would allow no one to pityher; she liked the work, she said, and wasonly sorry that as she grew older she could notmake such frequent trips, for her earnings werehelping herself and her children. So, you see, there are all manners of queercarriers and burden-bearers in the world, fromthat fleetest of postmen, the carrier-pigeon,which takes a message through the air forhundreds of miles with the speed of an expresstrain, down to the locomotive, the bicycle, thetrolley-car, and the automobile, which oncewould have been considered queer carriers indeed, but that time is now long past. FAMILIAR QUEER CARRIERS: THE SPRING MANEUVERS OF THE AWKWARD SQUAD.
