| Description | The church of 'St. Nicholas of the Bridge at Gloucester', 25 August 2014. Originally Norman (1190), it was rebuilt in the early 13th Century with Early English features. In the 15th Century the Perpendicular tower and spire were added and some windows altered. In 1643, during the English Civil War, the spire suffered a direct hit by a cannonball after which the truncated spire was capped with a pinnacled coronet and a ball finial. The church was restored in 1865 by John Jaques. Following subsidence, the tower was stabilized in 1927 and the entire church was rebuilt in 1935-38. |
