Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt. Luke's Lutheran Church, Cheektowaga, New York - 20210207.jpg |
English: St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 900 Maryvale Drive at Union Road, Cheektowaga, New York, February 2021. Built in two phases, the interesting architecture of this postwar suburban church reflects two distinct traditions of ecclesiastical architecture. The original portion facing Maryvale Drive, seen at left in this photo, dates to 1948 and exemplifies the Late Gothic Revival style with its triptych of narrow, pointed-arched windows and the Gibbs surrounds framing the side entrance. It served as the main worship space for the first ten years of the church's history, but was converted for use as a community hall and Sunday school upon completion of the much larger main portion of the building in 1958, which fully embraces Modernism with its sleek lines, geometric angularity, and austere lack of ornamentation. St. Luke's congregation was founded in 1945 and is affiliated with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. |
