Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt. Louis Public Library, 1301 Olive Street.jpg |
English: St. Louis Public Library, 1301 Olive Street. View of northwest corner of 13th & Olive.
Originally part of the St. Louis Public School system, the St. Louis library was founded in 1865, and became free and open to the public in 1894. The main library building at 13th and Olive was designed by Cass Gilbert in 1912 and was funded in part by a donation by Andrew Carnegie, famous for his “Carnegie Libraries.” The original 1865 library collection included 1500 books and has grown to the over 4 million books of today. It is interesting to note that the building at 13th and Olive has the J.B.C. Lucas Spring running through its basement and has a pump that releases the water into the public sewer system running 24 hours a day. Title: St. Louis Public Library, 1301 Olive Street. |
