Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt. James' Church and Parish House 861-65 Madison Avenue.jpg |
St. James' Episcopal Church (right) at 861-863 Madison Avenue on the corner of Easy 71st Street in the Lenox Hill neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, was built in 1884-85 and designed by R. H. Robertson in the Romanesque style. It was rebuilt in 1924 to a design by Ralph Adams Cram of Cram & Ferguson in the Gothic Revival style. The original design called for a tower over twice the height of the main building, but that was never built. Cram added a smaller tower in 1926, which was replaced in 1950 when it began to crumble. The "tin-can" replacement was designed by Richard Kimball. The church's Parish House (left) at 865 Madison Avenue between East 71st and 72nd Streets was built in 1937-38 and was designed by Grosvenor Atterbury in the Gothic Revival style. It replaced a brownstone that became too small for the church's needs. In 1999 architect Lee Harris Pomeroy was commission to draw up plans for the renovation and restoration of the church and parish house, not including the replacement of the steeple.
