Description

Oude Markt Vlissingen.

De Grote of Sint Jacobskerk is een tussenvorm tussen een basiliek en een hallenkerk. Het is een gebouw met brede zijbeuken waarvan de daken met een knik doorlopen over de zijkapellen, die aan de zijbeuken grenzen. Verder is er een groot transept of dwarsschip.

De toren en het lage koor dateren mogelijk al uit 1328. In 1572 werd de kerk voor de protestantse eredienst ingericht. Op 5 september 1911 viel de kerk ten prooi aan een grote brand, waarbij alleen het stenen casco en een deel der pilaren overeind bleven. In de periode 1953-1954 werd de kerk hersteld van de schade als gevolg van de oorlog 1940-1945 en van de watersnoodramp van 1953. In de jaren 1997-1998 werd het gebouw geheel gerestaureerd en werd het interieur opnieuw ingericht, waarmee de kerk ook voor andere doeleinden dan uitsluitend erediensten geschikt werd.
