[edit]DescriptionSt. George and the Dragon, Lalibela, Ethiopia (3231393251).jpg |
A ray of sun penetrates the dark interior of a 13th century rock-cut church to illuminate a painting of St. George slaying the dragon. St. George is Ethiopia's patron saint. The figure directly in front of the gallant horse's head personifies Ethiopia. If the painting were better lighted, you would be able to see that Ethiopia has climbed a tree and is clinging to the trunk for safety, presumably to escape the dragon. I tried to bring out some detail - any detail - in the area of the dragon's neck and head, but to no avail. What detail I was able to see wasn't of a quality to post. But I can tell you this dragon has a long snaky neck. No surprises there. Unlike other dragons in Ethiopian depictions of this image, however, this dragon's head is shown from the underside. The jaws are agape, exposing the white tissue that lines the inside of the top of the mouth. I could append a photo of a Cottonmouth in a similar pose, but this might be a case where the image is best left to the imagination. Church of Bet Denagil, Lalibela, Ethiopia. |
