Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt. Anthony of Padua RC Church, Buffalo, New York - 20200224.jpg |
English: Saint Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 160 Court Street at South Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo, New York, February 2020. Erected in 1891 (and substantially enlarged and altered in 1904), the congregation owes its existence to Bishop John Baptist Scalabrini of Philadelphia, whose concern about the religious well-being of the growing Italian-American immigrant community led to a wave of ordination of Italian-speaking priests and construction of new churches. At the time of the church's construction, parishioners lived mainly in squalid tenements in the Canal District just to the church's west, and as time went on they gradually moved into the more desirable precincts of the Lower West Side. To this day, St. Anthony's still holds one Mass per week in Italian. Buffalo City Hall is seen in the background. |
