Hildesheim (niederdeutsch Hilmessen) ist eine Stadt im Süden des Landes Niedersachsen. Die große selbständige Stadt, Kreisstadt und größte Stadt des gleichnamigen Landkreises ist eines der neun Oberzentren des Landes. Bis 1974 war sie eine kreisfreie Stadt. Die nächstgelegenen größeren Städte sind Hannover rund 30 Kilometer nordwestlich und Salzgitter etwa 25 Kilometer östlich von Hildesheim. Die Stadt ist katholischer Bischofssitz (Bistum Hildesheim) und Universitätsstadt.
Die Einwohnerzahl der Stadt Hildesheim überschritt 1974 durch Eingemeindung mehrerer Nachbargemeinden die Grenze von 100.000, wodurch sie zur Großstadt wurde. In Hildesheim leben 99.071 Einwohner (Stand: 30. September 2012).[2]
