English: Door, St.Williams College, York. Fifteenth century doorway to St.Williams College 770193. Arms: See of York; de Quincy (Gules, seven mascles or 3,3,1), first adopted by Saer de Quincy, 1st Earl of Winchester (c. 1170 – 3 November 1219), but here shown with tinctures reversed, possibly for difference. William of York (late 11th century – 8 June 1154) Archbishop of York, founder of St.Williams College, sometimes called "William FitzHerbert" was the son of Herbert of Winchester, or Herbert fitzAlberic, chancellor and treasurer of King Henry I. William of York thus lived in the pre-heraldic era and the arms are therefore attributed, not actual, based presumably on his connection with Winchester. |
