Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Letter written by Stéphane Mallarmé on Monday evening 25 April 1898 in Valvins in the department of Seine-et-Marne and mailed on 28 April 1898 to the attention of Miss Amélie Diéterle at the Théâtre des Variétés in Paris. This letter was accompanied by a visiting card of the poet where was written a charming quatrain composed for the famous actress Amélie Laurent, known as Amélie Diéterle (1871-1941).
Originally, Amélie Diéterle had asked Mallarmé a signature on the album of his lodge at the Varieties. On 28 April 1898, Stéphane Mallarmé copied these verses for his daughter Geneviève, saying: « to have sent the quatrain opposite, Chaton, replacing a signature that was begging me to come on the album from the lodge, to the Varieties ». He added ironically: « Tell, what a gallantin your daddy: it's my last parisiennerie… ».
One of Mallarmé's latest poems. He died in Valvins on 9 September 1898.
This correspondence was separated later. The letter and its envelope are sold at the Freeman auction house in Philadelphia, United States, on 31 January 2019 (lot n° 200) and the business card at Sothebys in Paris, France, on 9 October 2018 (lot n° 162).
