English: Stâlpul Infamiei, a version of the pillory instituted by the fascist Iron Guard during its takeover in Romania (September 1940–January 1941). This photograph was taken in Hârșova on January 19, 1941, some two days ahead of the Iron Guard's downfall, which allowed Police to document and investigate the death of Alexandru Spieghel, pictured on the right. A Jewish man, Spieghel had been kidnapped from Constanța by Guardist Petre Ion. He had been tortured in various ways, including being bastinadoed and pummeled by Ion, who also ordered the other three prisoners (all of them local peasants) to assault him; he was then tied in the freezing cold with no shoes on. All four were pelted with snowballs by schoolchildren, and Spieghel, who fainted, was eventually tied by the neck on orders from Guardsman Ion Șerbănescu. The autopsy revealed that he died that evening at the local Guard center, despite some belated attempts to revive him. See Alexandru et al., pp. 66–67. |
