Nederlands: Spui, Den Haag, tussen de Bierkade en de Amsterdamse Veerkade, ca. 1900. Het witte gebouw aan de linkerkant, Spui nr. 271, was het hotel 'De Zeven Kerken van Rome', dat daarvoor 'Hotel Pico' heette. In 1872 verbleef de socialistische revolutionair Karl Marx (1818-1883) in Hotel Pico, tijdens het vijfde congres van de International Workingmen's Association (IWA), gehouden van 2-7 september 1872 in Den Haag. Het hotel staat ook bekend om zijn werknemers Hendrik Jut (1851-1878) en diens latere vrouw Christina Goedvolk, die daar werkten in hetzelfde jaar dat Marx daar verbleef. In december 1872 pleegden Hendrik Jut en Christina Goedvolk een dubbele doodslag in Den Haag, tijdens een misgelopen inbraak. |
