Description

It is officially the first day of spring here in New Zealand. Thankfully, the rain cloud broke for a brief moment allowing me to take this one and only photograph of the waning gibbous moon. Observed from the Southern Hemisphere on September 1, 2015, the photograph was taken 5 hours after sunset.

Midway along the Lunar terminator, on the top left of this photograph, lies the raised margins of the 555 km wide Mare Crisium, a basaltic basin thought to be between 4.55 to 3.85 Ga ( 1 Ga = Gigaannum, a unit of time equal to 1,000,000,000 (one billion) years).
