Summary
[edit]DescriptionSpringhead Pumping Station - Cornish beam engine (geograph 6799554).jpg |
English: Springhead Pumping Station, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Cornish beam engine. 90" engine by Bells Lightfoot, of Newcastle-on-Tyne. Built 1876. Stopped 1952 and preserved in situ. This shows the typical 3 arbor Cornish valve gear with cataracts for both indoor and outdoor pauses. The two cataracts are seen on the floor either side of the valve gear and have been moved here from their original positions near the side walls. The one on the left controlled the pause before the indoor (suction) stroke (acting on the exhaust and steam catches in that order) and the one on the right controlled the pause before the outdoor (delivery) stroke (acting on the equilibrium catch) In 1991 this building was the museum of the Yorkshire Water Authority and was well maintained and full of interesting exhibits. The museum closed and the building was allowed to deteriorate appallingly, to the extent a roof beam came down on the engine. The building was repaired at considerable expense and is now open on rare occasions but it is a shadow of its former glory.
