35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Lagomorpha; Family: Leporidae; Genus: Pedetes; Genus species: Pedetes capensis. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 36-43 cm; Weight: 3-4 kg; Identification: The coat of the springhare varies from yellow-brown to rufous-brown. The tips of the ears and tail are black, and the underside is lighter. The springhare is often referred to as a mini kangaroo; Habitat: Floodplains; semiarid, sparsely-vegetated areas; Diet: Herbivore: selectively browser of green grasses; Reproduction: There is no distinct breeding season for springhares, although 76% of adult females in a population will be pregnant at a given time. Most females give birth to a single offspring three times during the year. Gestation lasts 77 days. Springhare live up to 14.5 years in captivity; Social Structure: Social groups range from 2-6 members; Behavior: These nocturnal animals spend their days hiding in burrows. If threatened, a springhare will try to rake the predator with the sharp nails on its hind feet; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The main predators of the springhare are snakes, owls, mongooses, and lions. They are also hunted by humans for food and their skin.
