A heavy snowinterspersed with an occasional shower of rain obscured ob-jects that were but a few feet away. At each corner there wasa dim street lamp by the light of which two sentries could beseen to meet occasionally, exchange greetings and turn tomove wearily on their way. St. Petersburg was under martiallaw. The first signs of dawn had not appeared in the eastwhen the people as if by common consent arose and wadingas best they could through the slush and mire of the streetsmade their way to the Palace Square. The snow had ceasedfalling only to be followed by the rain which descended insheets and penetrated the scanty attire of the gathering throng.Dawn had appeared seemingly compelled to do so by someinvisible power, but the sun rebelled and, as if unwilling toventure forth on such a day, remained
