JAPAN WALNUT, SIEBOLDIANA. JAPAN WALNUTS are found grow- ing wild in the mountains of northern Japan, and is, without doubt, as hardy as an oak. The leaves are of immense size, and of a charming shade of green. The nuts, which are produced in extreme abundance, grow in clusters of fifteen or twenty; have a shell thicker than the Persian walnut, but not so thick as the black walnut. The meat is sweet; of the very best quality; flavor like butternut, but less oily, and much superior, T^e trees grow with great vigor, assuming a very handsome form, and need no pruning; mature early ; bear young, and are more reg- ular and productive than the Persian walnut \ having an abundance of fibrous roots it trans- plants as safely as an apple tree. The SIEBOLDIANA, JAPAN, was prob- ably the first Japan Walnut introduced in this country. The above cut gives an excellent representation of the tree, showing habit of growth and fruiting. The cluster gives an idea of their enormous productiveness, while the single specimen shows the size and shape of the nut. See special collection No. 7, New and Valuable Nuts,
