Title
spout ewer VESSEL
Description
English: Cast copper-alloy tubular spout in the shape of a dog's head. The spout was made separately from the body of the ewer, and has now become detached. The attachment edge is long and U-shaped in cross-section. Although it has filemarks and solder on the edge, the U-shape is so narrow that it is hard to see how it could have sat securely on the body of the ewer. The neck curves up sharply from the lower edge and down gently from the upper edge. The dog's head is very stylised, with rectangular moulded ears and a moulded snout. There are no engraved details. The open jaws hold the cylindrical mouth of the spout. A fairly small example of the type, measuring 35 mm long at the attachment edge and perhaps 60 mm wide from the end of the cylindrical mouth to the tip of the attachment edge. 15th or 16th century.
