35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Carnivora; Family: Hyaenidae; Genus: Crocuta; Genus species: Crocuta crocuta. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 120-140 cm; Height: 70-90 cm; Weight: 50-80 kg; Identification: The short coat of the spotted hyena can be dirty yellow or red in color with dark brown spots. They have a short erectile mane, and their tails have a long black brush at the end of them. Hyenas are also known for their sloping back; Habitat: Grasslands, flat open terrain; Diet: Carnivore: carrion, large mammals (antelope, zebra, domestic livestock); Reproduction: Female hyenas carry their one or two pups for 110 days before giving birth. The pups are weaned by 18 months of age. The lifespan for these animals is 25 years in the wild and 40 years in captivity; Social Structure: Spotted hyenas live in packs of 10-30 individuals of which males are the dominant members; Behavior: Most activity occurs during the night hours; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: This is the largest species in the hyena family.
