THE ELEPHANT. Behold now Behemoth. Most sportsmen will, I fancy, agree with me thatthe old scientific name, Elephas indicus, was a far moreappropriate appellation for the Indian elephant thanthat by which he is now called ; for though the puristswould have us believe that the elephants of India, ofCeylon, of Sumatra, and perhaps of Siam and of theMalay States, are all different species, and that localraces occur in the Peninsula itself, the elephants nowextant fall naturally into two groups, the Asiatic orIndian, and the African (^Elephas africamts). ButBlanford has chosen to follow the prevailing fashion ofpriority in nomenclature, and to call the Indianelephant maximus because that name was bestowed onhim by old Linnaeus in the eighteenth century ; andso, though he is in reality a smaller animal than hisAfrican cousin, we must perforce drop the name whichfitted like a glove, and dub him inaximus as well.
