d. We all lived at the 6 SPORT ON LAND AND WATER Meadow Brook farmhouse. I hunted thehounds, and Robert Center and EliotZborowski were the whips during the firstthree seasons; after that I had professionalsas whips. I hunted the Queens CountyHounds, as the hunt was named, from 1877to 1893, and the Meadow Brook Hounds, which were established in 1881, from 1893to the end of the spring season of 1895.I also hunted the Orange County Houndsduring their first season. Drag-hunting, as I understand it, andas I practised it, is a science. I alwaysdrew a covert, and hounds were taught tohunt, and the drag was laid to representas nearly as possible the run of a fox. Thedrag was lifted from time to time and thehounds allowed to puzzle it out and pickup the scent again, thus giving the fielda chance to see hounds work and to enjoythe sport. At the end of forty or fiftyminutes we had a bagman; and as thefoxes were generally strong ones from themountains, they often gave us good sport. z* is ^ z ^ T)

HUNTING 7 Those that escaped were the founders ofthe fox family we hunt in Nassau Countytoday. I always hunted fifteen coupleof hounds, and as I never walked the linemyself, but simply gave the drag-manorders to go in a certain direction and tokeep on the grass as much as possible, itwas at times a difficult matter to find him,for he would have to lift his drag on accountof crops or for other reasons. As drag-hunting is carried on today, there is really no reason for the three orfour couples of hounds that race to thecheck, and then lie down until laid on again.A man in a pink coat could lead the fieldjust as well without any hounds. As itis, you have a good ride; but it is not drag-hunting. I admit it is much easier for themaster and the so-called huntsman; buta man must be young, in good condition, and a light weight to ride such a drag, andhe must be mounted on a thoroughbred. Thomas Gibbons ran the drag for mefor thirteen years, and was the best man 8 SPORT ON LAND AND WATER I ever
