ich had pursuedus all the way, and which now compelled us toturn back just as we had reached a gamecountry. We went up a fine valley runningfrom the east of the lake—the most openforest we had yet come to. It was timberedwith magnificent spruce-trees, some of whichI should say were at least 180 feet in height.There was but little undergrowth, it was thefirst ideal hunting ground we had struck. Weworked all the morning without finding any-thing but two-day-old tracks. After lunchwe suddenly came on quite fresh tracks of agood bull, possibly the one Lansdown had seenthe day before. Taking up the tracks, we followed steadilyon and must have come close enough to disturbhim, though we neither heard nor saw anything.We came, however, on the spot where he hadbeen lying down and had jumped up andgone off at a gallop. We tracked that bull till dusk and nevercame up with him. Fortunately he took usdown the valley to the lake where we werecamped, and we got home at nightfall. OUT OF THE FOREST

CHAPTER IX OUT OF THE FOREST September 12th was a lovely crisp morn-ing with a touch of frost in the air. The lakewas looking perfect as we turned our backs onit, leaving the game country and all thechances of another wapiti behind. It was hardluck and I think we were all more or lessdepressed. We made a good march down the Sprucevalley till we struck Keogh Lake in the earlyafternoon. This was the route by which weshould have come in, as it was fairly open, moreso than any other portion of the forest we hadgone through. The timber was very fine. Asmall creek ran down the valley, and along itthere were many beaver dams. Beavers are still protected by law through-out the island. We saw a large one swimmingacross Keogh Lake when in camp on our wayin, and at night more than once heard thecurious noise the beaver makes striking the water with his tail as he dives when frightened. 121 122 SPORT IN VANCOUVER Needless to say, regardless of all game laws, themen had several shots at the beaver
