English: Spoon, pewter, rounded bowl, four-five-sided stem, puritan or slip top knop, struck with makers touch inside bowl just below handle 'W A 63' and just below terminal 'K' additional comments- description- “Slip top” makers comment- “This is a known London spoon mark (PS1426-OP5402) that probably belongs to William Austin. He opened shop in 1663 and may have been dead by 1673.” other comments- “Slip top spoons are the most common of the early spoon styles. They were made from the late 14th century to the late 17th century, but this is one of the later ones. The fig-leaf shaped bowl was characteristic of English pewter and silver spoons for several centuries.” Peter Hayward, Database Manager, Pewter Society, England, 28 February 2008

Notes In the fourteenth century, solid food such as roast meats were eaten with the fingers whereas liquid foods like soups were served in bowls and eaten with a spoon. These are the earliest examples of domestic spoons from the Fenton collection.
