Then, loweringhead and tail, it trotted off. Presently Standing Wolf and Noo-koomcame upon the scene. The old womancaught sight of the boys foot protrudingabove the snow, and gave a piercing scream.She rushed forward and began franticallydigging away the snow, while StandingWolf dragged and tugged at the moosesheavy head. When Noo-koom felt the boyscold face, she sank back despairingly, and,while Standing Wolf was raising the body upand placing it on his sled, began to wailthe death chant. Then,bidding Noo-koom rise and haul the sled, hewent ahead to beat the path. Slowly they entered the forest and tooktheir tortuous way in and out among thetrees, and over and under the fallen timber.They crossed a lake and came upon a stripof burnt country, where the charred andlimbless trunks of a once dense forest stoodlike a multitude of black-enshrouded mourn-ers, as the pitiful little funeral passed on itsway. At the trapping path they found TheMarten, and near him a heap of frozenanimals taken from At-ticks trapping trail.Among them Standing Wolf noticed thecarcass of the wolverine, and set the head ofthe Moose down beside it. He busied himself unlacing the sled onwhich the body of the unfortunate At-ticklay, while the others dispersed in search of lOS SPIRIT LAKE poles for a scaffold upon which to place theremains.
