Summary

[edit]
Description The spiral tower at Glendalough. The bottom "window" seen on the tower is the entrance. It was placed above ground level so that the monastic order could escape into it when the Vikings raided the settlement. When all of the people and important possessions were inside, they would pull the ladder up with them and hang out until the Vikings left. The tower is tall to keep lookout for approaching Vikings. At the bottom, the tower walls are 3 feet thick. The tower loses two feet of diameter as between the bottom and top.
