Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide mineral, MgAl2O4. Iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni) can substitute for the magnesium, which results in a range of colors - clear, green, blue, red, pink, violet. Transparent spinel is a gemstone. It occurs in skarn deposits, where magma has intruded into limestones. Spinel also occurs in some pegmatites.

Seen here are euhedral and anhedral spinel crystals, apparently derived from marble or dolomitic marble in the Mogok Metamorphic Belt of Burma in southeastern Asia. This area is a collision zone between the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. The euhedral grains are octahedral crystals.

Locality: unrecorded site in (apparently) Momeik Township, north-northeast of the town of Mogok, Mandalay Division, Shan State, north-central Burma
