English: Sphinx, Victoria Embankment Metal statue, one of two, at the foot of 3,500 years old Cleopatra's Needle obelisk. The needle was gifted to Britain in 1819 by Mehmet Ali, Viceroy of Egypt, but was only erected in 1879 following a difficult sea journey. The embankment helps prevent the Thames from flooding London. |
