| Description |
English: Endothermic species can be a pain to photograph as they will often avoid getting too warm by turning their greatest surface area (wing face) away from direct sun. Also , Fritillary's in particular have a habit of ducking into the woods or brush to get out of the sun while in flight. On really hot days they will leave the meadows completely and hang out in the woods.
It all sounds like a promising adaptation to a warming planet, however, their larval host plants are in the meadows and most forests have had the flowering planets that typically inhabit the forest floor chocked out by invasive planets leaving little food. And yes, annual butterfly counts in the USA are recording most all spieces of fritillary's slow disappearance into extinction. Corporate farms that splice their crops with BT toxins have also taken a devastating tool. Such crops are banned in Europe but widely used in South America. |
