Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Aphrodite Fritillary (Speyeria Aphrodite)
I often find Fritillaries in amongst grass and the other leafy portions of prairie plants. They use the shade and partial shade to help them thermoregulate. I also frequently find them having drilled down into the prairie grasses and other vegetation in an apparent attempt to seemingly want to get to the bare or near bare ground underlying the meadow. More than once I’ve seen rather large specimens climb up out of the grass seemingly out of nowhere. Finally, on really hot days they’ll seek out coolers areas underneath ferns, or on damp moss in the deep shade. And although their spotting does reflect the color of the blossoms they may be supping on, I have also seen them roost on the forest floor amongst the pine cones where they are nearly invisible alongside the sugary white tips of the cone fronds. All in all, be careful where you walk in fritillary country.

Public domain
The Public Domain Mark (PDM) is not a copyright license, but a symbol used to indicate that a work is in the public domain. When it is applied by the author or the copyright holder, community consensus has decided such works as being public domain in the US and countries where it is legally possible to release own work to the public domain. In the countries where this is not possible, the copyright status of the work remains undetermined.
If a file is tagged with Public Domain Mark by someone other than the author or the copyright holder, a more specific copyright tag such as one found at Commons:Copyright tags/General public domain must be applied. If this is your own work, please use {{Cc-zero}} instead.
