[edit]DescriptionSpenlowArms.svg | Arms of Spenlow: Argent, a cross flory sable between four Cornish choughs proper (Spenlow, "Spenlow, lord of the manor of More, Hertfordshire; Spenlow of St Albans, Hertfordshire"); Seen in Ely Cathedral on Steward monuments as choughs proper not martlets as blazoned in Clay, J. W., ed. (1897). The Visitation of Cambridge made in Anno 1575, continued and enlarged with the Visitation of the same county made by Henery St George, Richmond Herald, marshall and deputy to Willm. Camden, Clarenceulx, in Anno 1619, with many other descents added thereto. Harleian Society, 1st ser. 41. London., p.7[1], under "Stuart" (i.e. Steward of the Isle of Ely). Spenlow was an eventual heiress of "Bestney of Hertfordshire", quartered by "Bestney of Hertfordshire", and Bestney was an heiress of Steward. See pedigree of Bestney in Metcalfe, W. C., ed. (1886). The Visitations of Hertfordshire, made by Robert Cooke, esq, Clarencieux, in 1572, and Sir Richard St George, Kt, Clarencieux, in 1634, with Hertfordshire pedigrees from Harleian MS 6147. Harleian Society, 1st ser. 22. London.), Appendix II, p.126[2]. Arms of Splenlow not listed in Burke, Sir Bernard, The General Armory, London, 1884, which gives these arms (with choughs proper) but with cross engrailed flory, as arms of "Philips of Shropshire" (Burke, p.800) |
