| Description |
English: Speen: Former Lambourn Valley Railway This is the trackbed of the former Lambourn Valley Railway which closed to regular passenger and freight traffic on 4 January 1960, almost fifty years previously to the day that the photograph was taken. However occasional military freight trains used the line to Welford and then to RAF Welford until 1973, before the track was lifted completely around 1976. There were plans to preserve the line as a heritage steam railway, but they did not come to fruition and now any new similar proposals would have several major civil engineering feats to overcome, not least how the line would now cross the new A34 Newbury Bypass which is immediately behind the photographer here. This is the trackbed viewed looking towards the former Speen station and Newbury. |
