Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Speedy Express Deli, 1799 Genesee Street at Burgard Place, Buffalo, New York, December 2021. Constructed in 1927, the most prominent architectural feature on this two-story brick commercial building is no doubt the unusual green tile awning that shades the second-story windows with support from paired curved knee braces, showing influence from the contemporaneously popular Mediterranean Revival and Arts & Crafts styles. Along with the row of shops to its west (part of which is seen here at right), 1799 Genesee was built for a price of $19,000 by entrepreneur Christopher J. Rasp. The building was originally the shared home of his own business, Rasp's Plumbing Supply, as well as a location of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company which was in operation until 1937. The grocery store rebranded briefly as a Red & White before closing for good the next year, whereupon Rasp's took over the whole building. The plumbing supply shop was in business until 1982. More recently, 1799 Genesee has been home to a series of convenience stores, currently Speedy Express Deli.
