Title
spectacle buckle with floral decoration
Description
English: Cast copper alloy double-loop or spectacle oval buckle frame which has a flat base and a convex profile. The strap bar is narrowed and flush with the rest of the frame. The pin is missing. The upper face of the frame is decorated with punched annulets which follow its inner edge around the circumference of the frame. There is a moulded trefoil knop, which resembles a fan, on the outer edge of each loop. The sides of the frame are concave and also have a moulded and less extended trefoil knop at either end of the strap bar. To the left side of one of these knops, there is a break in the body of the frame, leaving a gap. The buckle is 58.2 mm long and 29.3 mm wide and 3.9 mm in thickness. The bar within the frame is 17 mm long and 2.6 mm wide and 3.6 mm in thickness.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on p.65, No.403, which he dates to c.1550-1650.
Read (1995) illustrates another example on p.112, No. 705, which he dates from the late 16th century to the early 17th century.
