Title
spectacle buckle and plate
Description
English: Cast copper alloy, symmetrical double-looped, sub-oval, shoe buckle with a simple, narrowed, offset bar. On either side of the bar the frame is raised at the junction between the two. The frame has rounded ends and concave sides in plan. The inner edges are expanded where the pin rest is, and straight sided with a flat base so that the frame has a plano-convex profile in cross-section. The bar has a folded sheet copper-alloy plate with the edge of the hole remaining for the attachment stud to fix the buckle to a shoe. The pin and stud are now missing. The plate is corroded and torn at the end where it has separated.

The buckle is 28.5 mm long and 18.3 mm wide, and 2.7 mm in thickness; the bar is 11 mm long and 1.6 mm in thickness; the plate is folded in half so that it is 21 mm long, 9.4 mm wide and 0.5 mm thick.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 71, No.447, which is dated from c.1600-1720.

Read (1988) illustrates a similar example with raised junctions on page 143, No. 921, which is dated from c.1600-1650.
