Title
spectacle buckle (front)
Description
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy spectacle, double-loop buckle with ten recessed round settings for stones, with three opaque white glass stones remaining. The stones are round in plan, 5 mm in diameter, and domed in profile, almost pyramidal, with alternating trapezoidal facets and a rounded point at the apex. The pin bar is narrowed and recessed and the pin is now missing. The edge of the frame is made of ten semi-circular curves, in plan, following the outside of each of the stone settings. Between the circular settings are linear transverse ridges that divide and define each setting. The outer edges of the settings are also semi-circular in profile, and about 3 mm in thickness or height, where they survive, but several are missing due to corrosion and damage. The back of the frame would have originally been smooth and flat but is now quite pitted and has some active corrosion in patches.

Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on page 49, No.282, which is dated from 1650 to 1720.

Read (1988) illustrates a similar example on page 143, No.917, which is dated from 1650 to 1700.
